There are quite a few nostalgic games out there that are available for our smartphones these days. They have the ability to transport us into our teenage or even childhood years when we were literally glued to our phones in attempts to beat our own best scores. Who could honestly forget them? Some of these games were so popular that modern game makers decided to give them a makeover and reintroduce them to younger audiences. Let’s see how many of them you remember playing yourself:
Snake
There is probably not a single person over the age of 30 who had never owned at least one Nokia phone with its typical keyboard. Back then a Nokia phone would not be a Nokia phone if it didn’t have possibly the most well-known game in the world – the Snake. The game itself was introduced for the first time in 1997 on a Nokia 6110. The goal of the game was simple enough – to collect all the small dots (in later versions of the game fruits) and avoid any obstacles. With each level, the snake was moving faster and some of the highest levels looked like labyrinths. Nowadays, you can play this iconic game on an Android or iOS device, although the touch display is not making the experience as comfortable as the physical keyboard.
Stack Attack
Whoever didn’t have a Nokia phone was likely a proud owner of a Siemens phone with its distinctive orange display backlight. The Stack Attack game first appeared in 2001 on the A50 and C45 Siemens models. The objective was to move and break boxes without them filling all the space from the bottom to the top. The player had to move the boxes so that they would be in the same row. The principle of the game was very much similar to Tetris.
Angry Birds
New mobile phone devices with touch displays among other things brought new possibilities for games. A complete craze broke out in 2009 over grumpy-looking birds and their piggy enemies. Angry Birds is a game in which players use a slingshot to launch the birds at pigs with the intent of destroying all the pigs on the playing field. The more damage you incur the more points you get. This cult game was released in 2009 for iOS but its popularity prompted the developer to release a version for Android in the following year. It is, no doubt, one of the most memorable games – by 2014 it reached over 2 billion downloads and it was even adapted into movies.
Candy Crush Saga
Being one of the first games that made use of the freemium model, Candy Crush could and still can be downloaded and played for free, although players can also buy special actions to help them clear more difficult boards. The game first started on computers in 2012 since it was originally meant to be for Facebook – its Android and iOS versions came a bit later but managed to receive over 3 billion downloads by 2022. The concept of Candy Crush is relatively easy to grasp. The candy pieces of different colors need to be swapped on the game board so that the player matches at least 3 of the same color.
Pokémon Go
A game that achieved what none of its mobile game predecessors have – to get the kids outdoors and playing. Pokémon Go is based on the technology of augmented reality and uses GPS to let the players locate, capture, train, and battle virtual Pokémons. The game launched in 2016 and took players to various locations to hunt for one of the 150 creatures. Although it received praise for promoting physical activity, it also created much controversy due to some players suffering accidents while looking to capture Pokémons.
